Notice changes without trying to diagnose them
Breast lumps and changes have many possible causes, and many are benign. A new lump, focal thickening, nipple change, skin dimpling or persistent one-sided change should be assessed. Pain alone is not a reliable way to determine the cause.
Assessment is tailored
The clinician will ask about timing, menstrual or 怀孕 context, medicines, previous breast problems and family history, then examine the breasts and lymph node areas. Depending on age and findings, imaging and sometimes a tissue sample may be recommended.
Do not repeatedly press the area or rely on supplements, massage or a consumer test. Bring previous breast imaging if available and ask how and when results will be communicated.
Screening and symptoms are different
Routine screening is intended for people without symptoms. A new breast change needs clinical assessment even after a recent normal screening result. Attend all recommended follow-up until the finding has been explained.
At a glance
Key takeaways
- Many breast lumps are benign, but examination is still important.
- Assessment may combine examination, imaging and tissue sampling.
- A normal screening result does not replace assessment of a new symptom.
When to seek care
- Arrange prompt assessment for a new lump, nipple inversion or bloody discharge, skin dimpling, persistent one-sided change or an armpit lump.
- Seek urgent care for rapidly spreading breast redness with fever or severe illness, particularly during breastfeeding.
