Look at the child, not only the number

A fever is usually a temperature of 38°C or higher. Use a reliable digital thermometer as directed. A child’s breathing, alertness, hydration, skin colour and response to you can be more important than the exact temperature. Babies under three months with fever need prompt medical assessment.

Comfort and fluids

Offer frequent fluids and continue breastfeeds. Check the child regularly, including during the night. Dress them comfortably; cold sponging is not recommended. Fever medicine may help distress, but use only a product and dose suitable for the child, and do not alternate medicines unless a healthcare professional advises it.

Prevent medicine errors

Read the active ingredient and dosing device instructions. Avoid giving two products containing the same ingredient. Aspirin should not be given to children unless specifically prescribed.

At a glance

Key takeaways

  • Fever in a baby younger than three months needs prompt medical assessment.
  • Focus on breathing, alertness, fluids and urine output as well as temperature.
  • Check active ingredients and child-specific doses before giving medicine.

When to seek care

  • Seek emergency care for difficulty breathing, blue or mottled skin, a seizure, a non-blanching rash, severe drowsiness, confusion or inability to wake normally.
  • Get prompt advice if the child is dehydrated, is getting worse, has fever for five days or more, or you are worried.
