A common problem with many causes

Low 背痛 is very common. It is often described as non-specific because no single serious cause is found. Pain can still be intense, and recovery may be affected by sleep, stress, work demands and fear of movement.

Keep moving within tolerance

Prolonged bed rest can slow recovery. Continue ordinary activities as able, using shorter periods and gradual increases. Exercise should be matched to your needs; there is no single best routine for everyone. A physiotherapist can assess movement, strength and barriers to recovery.

Imaging is not routinely needed for uncomplicated low 背痛. A clinician may recommend it when the result is likely to change management or when a serious cause is suspected.

Build a sustainable plan

Set functional goals such as sitting comfortably for work or walking a certain distance. Track progress over weeks rather than judging recovery from one difficult day. Discuss safe work modifications and medicine options with qualified professionals.

At a glance

Key takeaways

  • Avoid prolonged bed rest; continue tolerable activity.
  • Increase exercise and daily tasks gradually.
  • Routine imaging is not needed for every episode of 背痛.

When to seek care

  • Seek emergency assessment for new loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the genitals or buttocks, or severe/new weakness in both legs.
  • Arrange prompt review for pain after major trauma, fever, unexplained weight loss, history of cancer, or pain that is persistent or worsening.
